The president of Maldives Mr.Mohamed Nasheed and the Indian Defense Minister A.K. Anthony after extensive meetings on different levels of both governments announced a series of steps both countries have taken to ensure safety and territorial sovereignty. Recent attacks of Somalian pirates in the far regions near the African coast has alerted countries as far away as Maldives.

Under the defense pact, joint Maldivian and Indian Navy and coast guard vessels will be patrolling the Maldivian Exclusive Economic Zone and the boarders of the Maldives. After the Mumbai attacks India has stepped up maritime surveillance around its territorial waters. Both Maldivian and Indian authorities stressed the importance of preventing possible terrorist attacks, earlier in the year the Maldivian coast guard with areal surveillance from the Indian Navy intercepted and sunk a suspected terrorist vessel smuggling weapons crossing the Maldivian Borders, its destination was believed to be Sri Lanka, but cannot be confirmed.

India has agreed to provide Maldives with coastal radars which would eventually be linked to a South Asian Seas Defense command post in India, currently Maldives has only two coastal radars protecting its twenty two Atolls. Further more a twenty-five bed Military hospital was also donated by the Indian Military, the Maldivian Defense Force has many doctors and specialists trained but currently lacks an official Military hospital. A press release from the MNDF (Maldivian National Defense Force) revealed that while this is a military hospital , civilians will also have the possibility of receiving treatment specially in emergency cases.

Maldives has also begun setting up an Air wing for its military. Primarily the air wing would provide surveillance and rescue operations. India has pledged technical assistance to train Maldivian pilots and maintenance crews while donating two helicopters to the Maldivian Defense Force. As Maldives is an island nation the importance of fast access to advanced medical facilities is crucial, currently sea planes are hired commercially for such medical evacuations to bring patients suffering from critical injuries and accident to hospitals and over seas.

Some critics say that this could jeopardize the sovereignty of Maldives both Indian and Maldivian authorities reassures that these are necessary steps to international anti -terrorism safety and there is definitely not going to be any interference from Indian authorities in Maldives. There has been some rising tensions in the region with China setting up a base in Sri Lanka which India has always viewed as its own back yard, and the defense pact with Maldives could be a step to re-establish themselves in the Indian Ocean. Maldives is a signatory to the non-aligned movement and enjoys excellent relations both commercially and diplomatically with both India and China.

Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world was built as as icon of love and eternal devotion by the Emperor Shah Jahan of India. The construction on the giant mausoleum was started when his favorite wife Mumthaz Mahal died while giving birth to their fourteenth child. Master crafts men from all over the world were brought to design this mega project that consisted of a work force of over twenty thousand and took over two decades to complete. The entire building was built from white marble brought from rajasthan (another Indian state) and the building was studded with precious and semi precious stones brought from, Sri Lanka, China,Arabia and Tibet. The complexity of the building styles are very unique as the Taj Mahal incorporates a lot of styles of architecture. This majestic structure is a witness to the vast riches of the Indian civilization (current estimates of the cost of the project runs into trillions of dollars). The history of Taj Mahal is so rich it has many books written on the course of its time through the centuries. To this day the royal couple rests together in this shrine where it attracts over 3 million people a year to experience this wondrous marvel. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South East Asia.

Nepal is faced with a new crisis just a week after a cabinet expansion and a government shake up. Kosi a water way that leads into the neighboring India’s 3rd largest (by population) state spilled over. The water way started to reach its peak capacity and according to locals the technical staff as the site did not raise any alarms. The water way is monitored by Indian engineers and technical support staff. Locals getting frustrated at the ever rising levels of water over the levees vented their frustrations on the officials and chased them away. A few hours after that there was a breach in the levees and the water rushed out resulting in a mass devastation that left 100 dead and over two million homeless in India. According to Indian government sources the Indian technicians tried to repair the waterway but the locals prevented them from repairing it. While a blame game has started on both sides Nepal claims that India has not done maintenance work on the water way for the past five years. No matter whose fault it is thousands of people watch their homes submerged and their livelihoods washed away, there is a massive relief effort delivering food and other essentials by both the Indian central and local Governments. It is estimated that the casualty rate would continue to rise and flood waters would bring with them a lot of water borne diseases.

Although India occupies only 2.4% of the world’s land area, it supports over 15% of the world’s population. Only China has a larger population. India’s median age is 25, one of the youngest among large economies. About 70% live in more than 550,000 villages, and the remainder in more than 200 towns and cities. Over the thousands of years of its history, India has been invaded from the Iranian plateau, Central Asia, Arabia, Afghanistan, and the West; Indian people and culture have absorbed and modified these influences to produce a remarkable racial and cultural synthesis.

Religion, caste, and language are major determinants of social and political organization in India today. However, with more job opportunities in the private sector and better chances of upward social mobility, India has begun a quiet social transformation in this area. The government has recognized 18 official languages; Hindi, the national language, is the most widely spoken, although English is a national lingua franca. Although 81% of its people are Hindu, India also is the home of more than 138 million Muslims–one of the world’s largest Muslim populations. The population also includes Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis.

The Hindu caste system reflects Indian occupational and socially defined hierarchies. Ancient Sanskrit sources divide society into four major categories, priests (Brahmin), warriors (Kshatriya), traders (Vaishya) and farmers/laborers (Shudra). Although these categories are understood throughout India, they describe reality only in the most general terms. They omit, for example, the tribes and those once known as “untouchables.” In reality, Indian society is divided into thousands of jatis–local, endogamous groups based on occupation–and organized hierarchically according to complex ideas of purity and pollution. Discrimination based on caste is officially illegal, but remains prevalent, especially in rural areas. Nevertheless, the government has made strong efforts to minimize the importance of caste through active affirmative action and social policies. Moreover, caste has been diluted if not subsumed in the economically prosperous and heterogeneous cities, where an increasing percentage of India’s population lives. In the countryside, expanding education, land reform and economic opportunity through access to information, communication, transport, and credit have lessened the harshest elements of the caste system.
